DIY Halloween Meg Ryan and Princess Diana Costumes

I’m nothing if not a last minute person. That is no exception when it comes to Halloween costumes. I usually think I’m not going to dress up because there’s not usually a party to go to, and then last minute I start thinking I’m missing out on something if I don’t, which leads me to Amazon, where dreams really do come true.

One Wig, Endless Options

I always think of a million Halloween ideas when there’s virtually no time left to do them. Last year, after Halloween, I thought about wanting to be Jackie Kennedy in the little pink suit and pillbox hat, but sadly, the holiday had passed. I don’t know how this Meg Ryan/Princess Diana look came to me, maybe in a dream, but once I thought of it, I had to make it happen.

I should start by saying You’ve Got Mail is my absolute favorite movie of all time. I used to keep it in my VCR and just play it over and over again. (After rewinding, of course.) My mom and I are big Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks fans, and she got me started on my love for them with this movie and the crowd favorite, Sleepless in Seattle.

Kathleen Kelly and Joe F-O-X in You’ve Got Mail

My mom loved Kathleen Kelly’s haircut so much, that she used to take the movie in to her hairdresser–this is when it came out on DVD, by the way–and have her hair cut and styled just like shopgirl herself. She looks adorable in this hairstyle, and it cracks me up that when I posted these looks online, most of her friends thought I cut my hair like that too. Not that I don’t love it, but I might save this hairstyle for when I’m a bit older or knee deep in being a mommy myself.

Now For the Costumes

Enough about me, let’s talk costumes. I think I subconsciously thought of this Princess Di look after seeing Hailey Bieber’s Vogue Paris shoot, which was inspired by Diana’s epic street style. I knew I had most of these things to go with the wig at home, or at least most millennials would. I didn’t have the biker shorts or chunky tennis shoes but I can wear them for other things too, so like, I considered it an investment for future outfits.

All you need is an oversized sweatshirt, biker shorts, crew socks, white chunky tennies, and a turtleneck underneath, of course. I knew I didn’t want to buy two very similar wigs for one Halloween, so I picked one that I thought would work with both very subtly different hairstyles. I was able to style it a bit differently for each look.

I took these photos in the park myself with a tripod and clicker, but that’s a whole other blog post for another time.

These sneakers are Steve Madden, but don’t be fooled, I scored them for twenty bucks at TJMaxx! I’ve linked some cheaper chunky ones here. This sweatshirt is from Target, and I have it in two other colors/cities. Never mind that I’ve never actually been to Portland.

My Meg Ryan look was a bit easier to put together, mostly because I just borrowed this twin set from my mom’s closet. If she had the haircut she had to have the outfit too, right? I wanted to take a photo that encapsulated Kathleen Kelly, at her laptop surrounded by the friendliest flower, daisies.

I hope you have enjoyed reading about my last minute DIY Halloween costumes! A few other looks you could do with this wig would be: Ellen DeGeneres, Natasha Richardson (mom from The Parent Trap), Hillary Clinton, and honorable mention from a friend–the Prancercise lady.
